republicans and we saw this happening with the sandy aid where he didn't put the sandy relief bill on the floor, moderate republicans like peter king from new york, other atlanta -- the speaker brought that up very quickly without the support of the entire caucus. he broke what we call here in washington the hastert rule, we need a majority of the majority to bring something forward. he would need to do something with guns, and without moderate republicans calling on the speaker to bring something to the floor, it's going to be very difficult for the speaker in leadership to have the political cover that they need. so if the president needs to target somebody, it's these moderate republicans and get the people in their districts riled up. >> karen, do you agree with that assessme assessment? >> i think there is a dangerous for the republican party here in the same way we have seen in a number of these other debate where is the fringe, the far right gets so ridiculous. saying that the president is using children as human shields, likening him to hitler and stallen, and some of that

you've got the sandy hook families coming in, it's very hard to oppose -- it's not about the president. you've got -- it's not even about bloomberg's money that's going to go into the advertising. the emotional force of the sandy hook families is just like it was with the 9/11 families. and republicans have got to face up to that. frankly, democrats have to face up and grow a spine here as well. they have run away from the gun debate for 20 years or so because it's helped them get into power in some states. >> by the way, there are 30 to 40 democrats in the house, too, will also fight any reasonable, rational reforms. you know, one of the moments yesterday, richard, that i thought was really telling, i thought one of the president's strongest moments is when he said if you have a congressman or congresswoman that supports assault weapons, ask them why. see, that's where the extremists, that's where the survivalists lose this argument. why do you need an assault weapon? why do you need a high-capacity magazine? you start talking to them, and it always goes back to the same thing. always
for superstorm sandy. the relief package was passed by the senate even though house speaker john boehner hadn't brought it up for a vote. in fact, the senate passage helped to put pressure on the house. sandy relief passed in the house with a minority of republican votes and almost every democrat. speaker boehner would not have brought the bill to the floor if it hadn't already been passed in the senate. there was similar pressure with the fiscal cliff deal. it passed in the senate first. then boehner was forced to bring it to the floor for a vote and the house, even though only a minority of republicans supported it. today senator majority leader harry reid seemed to clarify his position somewhat. in a statement he said, "i am committed to ensuring the senate will consider legislation that addresses gun violence and other aspects of violence in our society early this year. all options should be on the table." well, that sounds a little bit better. but there should be no hedging on this issue whatsoever. especially from democrats. because if they side with the president of the united states t

this other story, there's been a lot of discussion about guns in schools, and guns in general after the sandy hook sad situation in december in connecticut. and now there's a kindergarten girl who apparently owns one of these little devices, you look at the screen at hello kitty bubble gun. apparently, she was talking about this toy at school. it's my understanding she actually didn't even have the toy with her at the mt. carmel area school in pennsylvania. as a result of just talking about shooting bubbles at one another, apparently she received a ten-day suspension. it was reduced to two days, but that's kind of unclear now whether or not she should even have faced any kind of suspensi suspension. >> steve: well, this is kind of crazy the two five-year-old girls were waiting at the bus, hey, i'm going to shoot you with my hello kitty bubble machine and somebody overheard it and next thing you know, just because people are, you know, freaked out about guns since sandy hook, the school got involved. and she was suspended for ten days, and then reduced it to two. but she was also given, becaus

of these latest, you know, incidents up at sandy hook, et cetera. they want something done, they don't want this one to pass without something happening. and what is the something? is it an assault weapons ban? is it universal background checks? but i do think there is an overreaction to the president's 23 executive orders. they really weren't much -- things like, you know, ordering studies into what causes gun violence. i mean these weren't like, you know, massive grabs for power. i think this rhetoric is sort of over done. jon: the president generally does frame his battles. he cast his opponents as the republicans in congress, when it's fair to say that he's got an awful lot of democratic opposition to some of these proposals as well. >> that's true. what is happening here is this goes back to individual district, and, look, the country may be wanting more control, or some action to make guns safer, but it's different by district. in inner cities whether you're a democrat or republican gun control is much more popular. you get out in the more rural states, more rural areas and there are

's causing some real problems for victims of super storm sandy. believe it or not, some of those folks still have no heat, no power in their homes. including this man in new jersey who has yet to receive any aid and is now living in a trailer next to his house. authorities in several american states are already blaming the weather for multiple deaths. schools are closed all over the place. commuter trains and subways jammed. and let's not forget about the frozen pipes and the water mains. take a look at this. chicago firefighters before dawn had to battle a warehouse fire. one of the biggest they have had in years. but the water froze right on to the side of the building. the conditions so bad, look at this. a third of the department had to help put it out. they even had to bring in empty city buss so firefighters with frozen gloves like this guy had a place to try to get out of cold. incredible. steve brown our chicago-based correspondent with more on the deep freeze. the number of deaths appears to be rising tonight. >> yeah. we're across the street from that warehouse fire that you mentio
